Are You Spiritually Growing or Just Getting Older in Your Faith?

There is a difference between aging in your faith and actually growing in it. The book of Hebrews has a direct and challenging word for believers who have been in the faith long enough to know better but have settled into spiritual comfort. This message from Hebrews 5 and 6 is a wake-up call to move from spiritual infancy into maturity.

What Does It Mean to Be Spiritually Dull?

Hebrews 5:11 opens with a pointed observation: "There is much more we would like to say about this, but it is difficult to explain, especially since you are spiritually dull and don't seem to listen." - Hebrews 5:11

The Greek word behind "spiritually dull" is nathros. It means sluggish, lazy, unmotivated, and numb. It does not mean incapable or unintelligent. It describes someone who has stopped paying attention, stopped engaging, and stopped growing.

Think of a runner who used to sprint but now barely jogs. Not because of an injury, but because they stopped training. That is what spiritual dullness looks like.

This same word appears again in Hebrews 6:12: "Don't be nathros. Imitate those who preserve the word of God." The writer connects both passages intentionally. The warning is consistent: do not become spiritually passive.

Why Does the Bible Compare Spiritual Immaturity to a Baby on Milk?

Hebrews 5:12-14 makes the comparison plain:

"You have been believers so long now that you ought to be teaching others. Instead, you need someone to teach you again the basic things about God's Word. You are like babies who need milk and cannot eat solid food. For anyone who lives on milk is still an infant and doesn't know how to do what is right. Solid food is for those who are mature, who through training have the skill to recognize the difference between right and wrong." - Hebrews 5:12-14

Milk is not bad. It is essential in the beginning. But staying on milk forever is unhealthy. Imagine a toddler running around clutching a bottle. Cute at two years old. Concerning at thirty. That is the picture the writer paints of believers who never move past the basics.

The bottle is meant to be put down. At some point, you grow teeth and you need solid food.

What Is the Difference Between Milk and Solid Food in the Christian Life?

Milk represents the foundational truths of Christianity. Solid food represents deeper understanding, richer doctrine, spiritual discernment, and wisdom.

Mature believers crave depth. They want to know more of God. Immature believers avoid the deeper things and stay comfortable with the surface level.

Maturity is not about knowing everything. It is about positioning yourself to receive more from God. More understanding. More clarity. More of His presence.

Time in Church Does Not Automatically Produce Spiritual Maturity

This is one of the most important points in this passage. Simply showing up on Sunday does not make you mature in your faith. Growth happens when you sit in the scriptures throughout the week, when you pray, when you study, and when you spend real time with God.

Every relationship requires time and care to grow. You spend time with your spouse, your children, your friends. Why would your relationship with God be any different? You cannot grow in relationship with someone you do not spend time with.

Spiritual maturity is measured by development, not duration. How long you have been a Christian is not the measure. How much you have allowed God to develop you is.

What Are the Basic Teachings Christians Should Already Know?

Hebrews 6:1-3 lists the foundational doctrines that believers should not need to keep relearning:

• Repentance from evil deeds
• Faith in God
• Baptisms
• Laying on of hands
• Resurrection of the dead
• Eternal judgment

"So let us stop going over the basic teachings about Christ again and again. Let us go on instead and become mature in our understanding." - Hebrews 6:1

The writer is not dismissing these truths. They matter deeply. But the point is that believers who have been in the faith for years should already have these foundations in place. The goal is to build on them, not to keep circling back to them.

Foundations matter, but you do not live your whole life in the basement.

What Does Repentance Actually Mean?

The Greek word for repentance in the New Testament means a change of mind. Not just feeling bad about sin, but an actual shift in thinking and direction. When your mind changes, your actions change. You do what you believe.

When the Holy Spirit convicts you and you begin to trust what God says over what you used to believe, your life starts to look different. Repentance is the starting line, not the finish line. God has so much more for you beyond that first step.

What Are the Different Types of Baptism in Scripture?

Hebrews references baptisms as a foundational teaching. Scripture speaks of several distinct baptisms:

• Baptism into Christ: The spiritual union with Jesus at salvation, a work of the Holy Spirit. "For we were all baptized by one Spirit so as to form one body." - 1 Corinthians 12:13

• Water baptism: The public, outward declaration of an inward faith. It is the believer saying to the world, "I belong to Jesus."

• Baptism of the Holy Spirit: An empowerment for witness and spiritual gifting. The Holy Spirit living inside you gives you the power to say no to sin and to live as an overcomer.

• Baptism of fire: The purifying work of the Spirit in your life. As John the Baptist said, "He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire." - Matthew 3:11. This is the refining process where everything that is not of God is burned away as you become more like Christ.

Why Does the Resurrection of the Dead Matter to Your Faith Right Now?

If Jesus did not rise from the dead, there is no hope. But because He did, believers have the promise of resurrection and eternity with God. Death is not the end. You can see your loved ones again. That hope is not symbolic. It is real and it is coming.

For believers, eternal judgment is not something to fear. It is a day of reward. You will stand before a just God who sees everything you have done in faith and obedience. Every knee will bow. Every person will be judged. But if Jesus is your Lord and Savior, you carry all of His promises with you into that day.

Why Does God Want You to Go Deeper in Your Faith?

The writer of Hebrews wanted to teach the Hebrew Christians about the Order of Melchizedek and deeper truths about the priesthood of Christ. But he could not get there because they were still stuck on the basics.

God has deep things He wants to show you. There are questions people around you are already asking. Questions about free will, about suffering, about heaven, about a loving God and the existence of evil. If you only know the surface level answers, you cannot help lead them to the truth.

Questions are not the enemy. Questions are how you find answers. Seeking deeper understanding is not a threat to your faith. It is what God calls you to. As you go deeper, God gives you experiential knowledge, not just head knowledge. You begin to see Him move. You begin to recognize His voice. You begin to notice the people around you who need what you carry.

The command to make disciples is not just for pastors. As you go on your journey through life, you are called to bring others along. But you can only take people as far as you have gone yourself.

Life Application

This week, your challenge is to take one intentional step toward solid food. Not just showing up on Sunday, but carving out time to sit with God on your own. Open the Word. Pray. Ask Him to take you deeper. Give Him permission to grow you beyond where you are comfortable.

Ask yourself these questions before the week is over:

• Where have I become spiritually dull or lazy in my faith?

• Am I consuming from the church, or am I contributing to it and to the people around me?
  ‍
• Who am I discipling right now, and who in my life needs me to share what God has done for me?
  ‍
• What would it look like for me to move from the basics into a deeper, more active relationship with God this week?

Repentance and faith are the starting line, not the finish line. Salvation is the beginning of the journey. God has so much more for you. The question is whether you are hungry enough to go after it.
