Who Is Jesus Christ? Understanding His Divine Nature and Authority

In a world filled with confusion, competing voices, and endless distractions, one question remains central to our faith: Who is Jesus Christ? The book of Hebrews provides a powerful answer, establishing Jesus as superior to all other sources of revelation and worthy of our complete trust.

The Context of Hebrews: A Message for Struggling Believers

The book of Hebrews was written around 78 AD to Hebrew Christians - Jewish believers who had converted from Judaism to Christianity. These believers faced a unique challenge: the temptation to return to their old religious practices or to blend their new faith in Christ with legalistic traditions.

The purpose of Hebrews is clear: to encourage believers to remain diligent in their faith and avoid becoming spiritually lazy or legalistic. Throughout the book, we see urgent encouragements to "pay careful attention," "hold on to courage and hope," "hold firmly to your faith," and "run with perseverance."

Why We Settle for Less Than God's Best

Good Is the Enemy of Best

One of the most dangerous traps we face is settling for what's merely good instead of pursuing what's best. The writer of Hebrews uses three key words repeatedly: "better," "superior," and "greater" - all pointing to Jesus as the ultimate choice.

We naturally tend to settle for substitutes in life because they feel comfortable and controllable. These might include:

Comfort-seeking behaviors: Food, entertainment, shopping, busyness, or substances that provide temporary relief but don't address root problems.

People-pleasing: Seeking romantic attention, family validation, or approval from others instead of finding our identity in God's love.

Achievement and control: Placing our worth in career success, grades, fitness, or trying to control every aspect of our lives.

Religious activity without relationship: Checking spiritual boxes and knowing facts about God while missing an actual relationship with Him.

Jesus: Superior to All Previous Revelation

God's Ultimate Communication

"'Long ago, God spoke many times and in many ways to our ancestors through the prophets. And now in these final days, he has spoken to us through His Son.'" - Hebrews 1:1-2

Throughout history, God communicated through visions, dreams, the law, and historical events. He spoke through burning bushes, freed people from slavery, and revealed Himself gradually through the prophets. But now, God has spoken in a new and ultimate way through His Son.

Jesus isn't just another messenger - He is the message. He reveals God perfectly and completely.

Jesus as Creator and Sustainer

"'God promised everything to His Son as an inheritance. And through His Son he created the universe.'" - Hebrews 1:2

This passage establishes Jesus as the active agent in creation. He didn't just participate in creation - He was the Creator. The Father, Son, and Holy Spirit worked together in creation, with Jesus as the one through whom all things were made.

Jesus Is Greater Than the Angels

Divine Sonship, Not Created Being

"'For God never said to any angel what he said to Jesus: You are my Son. Today I have become your Father.'" - Hebrews 1:5

This distinction is crucial because various groups throughout history have tried to diminish Jesus' divine nature:

  • Jehovah's Witnesses claim Jesus is Michael the Archangel
  • Some early sects believed Jesus was an exalted angel
  • Islam views Jesus as only a prophet
  • Judaism sees Jesus as merely a human teacher

The writer of Hebrews makes it clear: Jesus is not an angel. He is the divine Son whom the angels worship.

Jesus' Eternal Nature

"'You are always the same. You will live forever.'" - Hebrews 1:12

While creation is temporary and will age like old clothing, Jesus remains eternal and unchanging. Only God can create, sustain, and end the universe - and Jesus is that eternal God.

What Jesus Actually Offers

Everything we chase in life is merely a shadow of something real that Jesus provides:

Rest Instead of Exhaustion

"'Come to me and I will give you rest.'" - Matthew 11:28. Not escape or numbing, but actual rest that only God can provide.

Identity Instead of Insecurity

With God, you don't have to earn love - you start from it. He loved you while you were still in your worst sin.

Purpose Instead of Drifting

Jesus gives direction that isn't tied to success or failure. Your purpose in Christ remains constant regardless of circumstances.

Forgiveness Instead of Shame

God doesn't just erase guilt - He removes the complete weight. "'As far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us.'" - Psalm 103:12

Presence Instead of Loneliness

"'I will never leave you nor forsake you.'" - Hebrews 13:5. He is with you in quiet moments, chaos, heartbreak, and joy.

Transformation Instead of Trying Harder

Jesus doesn't ask you to fix yourself first. He changes you from the inside out through His Spirit.

Life Application

The central question of Hebrews 1 demands a personal response: Who do you say Jesus is? This isn't just an intellectual exercise - it's a life-defining decision that affects how you live, where you find security, and what you pursue.

This week, examine the areas where you might be settling for "good" instead of God's "best." Are you seeking comfort, control, or approval from sources other than Christ? Are you trying to earn God's love through performance, or are you resting in the truth that you start from a place of being loved?

Questions for Reflection:

  1. In what areas of my life am I settling for temporary relief instead of seeking God's lasting solutions?
  2. Do I truly believe that Jesus is superior to everything else I might place my trust in?
  3. Am I living as though my salvation depends on my performance, or am I resting in what Christ has already accomplished?
  4. Where do I need to stop trying harder and instead allow God to transform me from the inside out?

Remember, your relationship with Christ is not based on emotional experiences but on a deliberate choice to place your faith and trust in Him alone. Choose daily to believe that Jesus is who He claims to be - your Creator, Savior, and Lord.
